The Tree of Life forms the ground-plan of the Western Esoteric Tradition and is the system upon which pupils are trained in the Fraternity of the Inner Light. The transliteration of Hebrew words into English is the subject of much diversity of opinion, every scholar appearing to have his own system. In these pages I have availed myself of the alphabetical table given by MacGregor Mathers in The Kabbalah Unveiled because this book is the one generally used by esoteric students. He himself does not adhere to his own table systematically, however, and even uses different spellings for the same words. This is very confusing for anyone who wishes to use the Gematric method of elucidation, in which letters are turned into numbers. When, therefore, Mathers gives alternative trans literations, I have followed the one which coincides with that given in his own table. The capitalisation employed in these pages may also appear unusual, but it is the one traditionally used among students of the Western Esoteric Tradition. In this system, common words, such as earth or path, are used in a technical sense to denote spiritual principles. When this is done, a capital is used to indicate the fact. When a capital is not used, it may be taken that the word is to be understood in its ordinary sense. As I have frequently referred to the authority of MacGregor Mathers and Aleistet Crowley in matters of Qabalistic mysticticism, it may be as well to explain my position in relation to these two writers. I was at one time a member of the organisation founded by the former, but have never been associated with the latter. I have never known either of these gentlemen personally, MacGregor Mathers having died before I joined his organisation, and Aleister Crowley having then ceased to be associated with it. The Society of the Inner Light, founded by the late Dion Fortune, has courses for those who wish seriously to pursue the study of the Western Esoteric Tradition. Information about the society may be obtained by writing to the address below. Please enclose British stamps or international postal coupons in your letter if you wish a response...

The Mystical Qabalah edition by Dion Fortune Religion Spirituality eBooks

Outstanding, insightful, detailed overview of Qabalistic philosophies/thought-processes by a very wise, discerning, and exceptionally qualified woman.

I've researched many spiritual practices/ doctrines, but I'd never yet delved into Qabalah.
Fortune's book was my first foray into the subject, and since completing it, I've ordered Israel Regardie's "Garden of Pomegranates" for further perspectives on Qabalah & information on pathworking, as it's called.

I've realized Qabalah is:
1) a complete template of the human psyche/spirit as well as the macrocosmic level - (a feat made possible due to the fact that it was purveyed via Archangel Metatron).
Hence i'd categorize the knowledge in this book as "Esoteric Psychology", helping you to unlock an ever-higher perspective of reality/self through the cultivation of discernment.

2) the missing/hidden link of spirituality for Western peoples (we've always relied exclusively on Eastern traditions, such as Buddhism & Hinduism, being unaware of the existence of Qabalistic traditions, which may prove more natural, harmonious, & lucrative for the "Western temperament".)

3) the missing mystical aspect of the Christian religion. (although Christianity grew out from Judaism, it neglected to borrow this important tradition of knowledge/process of illumination)

Fantastic book by Dion Fortune (aka Violet Firth) and a great asset to the spiritual Seeker.

Peace-
Paul C.

The Mystical Qabalah edition by Dion Fortune Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Still a good compendium of basic information, despite the dated language. It was, after all, first published a long time ago! The "updates" from the descendants of her lodge are interesting and in many cases helpful.
This work is of course a classic in the Western esoteric tradition; so, as far as content goes, I'm satisfied with my purchase. A word must be said, however, about the actual publishing process in regards to this particular edition -- if only to caution other prospective buyers.

This printing of Dion Fortune's seminal work has obviously been produced by scanning an earlier version, using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. OCR is a fine technology, but has evidently not yet been perfected -- with the result that what was originally typeset as e.g. the word "remarkable" may be scanned and identified by the software as "remarkabl&". --Clearly this is nonsense, but unfortunately a great deal of this kind of gibberish has made its way into the copy that I received.

In fact the edition is regrettably quite riddled with errors of this type -- several per page, by my reading. Even worse, absolutely no attempt has been made to reconcile the pagination of the reprint vs. the original edition; the editors have simply omitted page numbers entirely! This not only makes the Table of Contents useless (as it refers to the pagination of the original edition), but it also tends to make any note-taking or referencing an exercise in frustration. I was eventually forced to accept that in order to make this even a moderately useful volume, I would need to write the page numbers in manually, and then go back and correct the Table of Contents to my handwritten pagination.

Finally, there are multiple points at which the paragraph formatting is corrupted as well, such that line breaks may appear for no reason in the middle of any given paragraph -- even in mid-sentence! This is merely an esthetic point, of course, but it does I think reveal that little or no actual proofreading was endeavored in the production of this edition. If 's subcontractors can't provide better quality control than this, I would respectfully submit that a new RFP might be in order. Even in our digital age, there is more to the art of making decent books than simply running off a few hundred pages of OCR-ed text and then binding them with a slick cover! For my part, I will make do with this edition, even in its relatively deplorable typographical state. I was already somewhat familiar with the content anyway, having owned an earlier edition that was regrettably nicked while I was at University; so I find I'm generally able to reconstruct the garbled text, or otherwise work around the egregious proofreading errors. However, I certainly wouldn't recommend this to others for purchase, nor would I buy a similar edition from again.
Granted I'm still a newbie -- but from what I've read so far (which is a lot) and based on reviews and recommendations from teachers, fellow students, and good ol' , I put this book on my Top 5 list along with Lon Milo Duquette's "The Chicken Qabalah of Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford," Israel Regardie's "The Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic," Frater Barrabbasand's "Magical Qabalah for Beginners A Comprehensive Guide to Occult Knowledge," and Anita Kraft's "The Qabalah Workbook for Magicians."

For a concise introduction to Judaic/Hebraic Kabbalah which is quite different from Hermetic Qabalah, I enjoyed Dovid Krafchow's "Kabbalistic Tarot."
This unique book, written by a serious student of an established school of the Western traditions dispenses with the absurdities of unnecessary concealment, and lays out for the reader a practical guide to the Kabbalah and its associations. This book successfully "translates" esoteric teachings into the language of the psychologist. This permits the modern student of either psychology or occult science to better understand the approach taken by the other to the process of human becoming.

Of further tremendous value, and a pleasant and unexpected bonus, was the afterword by modern adepts of the authors school. Here they lay out more modern findings, couching the authors work in some practical guidance on moving from sphere to sphere , or, from one state of perception to another more integrative one.
Incredible book. Page after page of lucid insight and wisdom, images and connections percolating around my mind and making SENSE of so many ideas that were previously just floating around disconnected. My first book on the Qabalah and I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to the topic.
